The Karl-Marx-Allee, Berlin

I haven’t really taken many pictures so far in January, and those I have taken is not the best. While I wait for more photo opportunities (and the time to go out with my camera during day light hours), I am posting some photos from my Berlin trip before Christmas.

The Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin is a socialist boulevard built in the GDR period (DDR in German) with some really monumental buildings. You can read more about it over at Wikipedia. It’s history is really fascinating.

  1. A remarkable point with these buildings is, that they are not all facade as it often was in the communist bloc. The flats were large and luxurious for the time (I’ve been in some of them).

    1. I’ve read that they were luxurious for the time. How fascinating that you’ve been in some of them. I’m sure I could have lived there. πŸ™‚

      1. It was in the early nineties, and at this time, many students lived in these apartments that were, in the GDR, originally given to the political elites only. Yet another amusing twist of history πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚

  2. You definitely should go, Helen! Berlin is a truly fantastic city with so much history, and on top of that great shopping, restaurants and small art galleries. lots of great museums too.
