Trondhjems (the old name of Trondheim) Hospital is Scandinavia’s oldest social institution. It is situated in an area close to the city centre called Hopsitalsløkkan. The institution was founded in 1277 and has been in use ever since. From the beginning it was a mix of hospital, housing for the poor, nursing homes and insane asylum. Today is is a nursing home for elderly people with places for people with dementia, a day center and center for volunteers. It is connected to the church called the Hospital Church which is just across the street.
The building that stands today is from 1845 and covers an entire block.
